Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Group of the Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory (STL) is responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly, and installation of all mechanical systems at the lab. These systems include computer-controlled target positioning stages, low radar cross section support pylons, solid-state transceiver layouts, far-infrared laser transmitters, optical mounts, target mounting techniques, motorized models for Doppler radar studies, and overall compact range designs.

The compact radar ranges at STL and our sponsors affiliate locations are fully supported using state of the art CAD software, and the latest CNC machining techniques, to design and manufacture the appropriate mechanical systems. The mechanical engineering groups’ in-house machine shop is fully stocked with the latest tool room equipment to support all compact range radar measurements, and other ongoing research being conducted at the laboratory.
